My research concerns the intersection between information theory, machine learning, and communication, with particular interest in data modeling, processing, and analysis.

Alon Orlitsky received B.Sc. degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering from Ben-Gurion University in 1980 and 1981, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1986. From 1986 to1996 he was a member of technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories' Mathematical Sciences Research Center. From 1996 to 1997 he was a quantitative analyst at the investment firm D.E. Shaw. In 1997 he joined UC San Diego and has since been with the Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Computer Science and Engineering Departments.

Alon received the ITT International Fellowship in 1982, the 1992 IEEE W.R.G. Baker Award, and the 2006 Information Theory Paper Award. He coauthored two papers for which his students received Student Paper Awards. He hods the Qualcomm Chair for Information Theory and Applications and directs the Center for Wireless Communications, and the Information Theory and Applications Center.
